Promise, I’ll Be Fine

Katarína Gramatová

Promise, I’ll Be Fine tells the story of fifteen-year-old Enrique, who is growing up with his grandmother in a forgotten Slovak village. His mother, Martina, works far away in the city and only rarely comes home. The summer days pass slowly: riding mopeds, small mischiefs with friends, the occasional tasks from his mother. Yet beneath the surface, something is changing. Enrique begins to realize that his mother’s demands are not as innocent as they once seemed. Rumors circulate in the village. His certainty about his mother starts to crumble—he discovers that the image he had built of her may have been only an illusion. This intimate coming-of-age drama is inspired by true events from Slovakia’s so-called “hungry valleys”. The film features non-professional actors discovered directly at the filming location.
