Mr. Kopfrkingl works in a crematorium, is married and has two children. He takes an excellent care of his family and fulfills his duties at work very conscientiously. One of his acquaintances, Walter Reinke, is very enthusiastic about the annexation of Austria into the Greater Germanic Reich. He persuades Kopfrkingl that he has pure Aryan blood in his veins. Kopfrkingl joins the Party and gradually obtains a perverse belief about saving the world against the Jewish threat. His colleagues, friends and family need to be saved but they don’t need to worry – nobody is going to suffer and he will save them all.

Viktória and Klára are sisters. After the decease of their rich father, younger Klára inherits almost all the money. She is very popular with people around her and courted by several men at the same time. One of them is notary Glenar, with whom older Viktória is secretly in love. Viktória envies her sister’s inheritance and her attractiveness to men. She doesn’t even try to hide her jealousy and decides to get rid of her rival forever. Viktória pours a slowly working poison into her sister’s glass.

A daughter of rich parents, 30-year-old Štěpa yearns to get married and have children but according to the social norms she cannot marry under her class. However, she is too freethinking and independent for her provincial suitors. In the end she marries her cousin Pavel, a former army officer. Štěpa gradually finds out that Pavel was infected by syphilis during his turbulent years in the army. The untreated disease devastates and irreversibly paralyzes his body, and starts to eat away at his brains.
