Perla

Vienna, early 1980s. Perla—a Czechoslovak dissident, painter, and single mother—does not have it easy. She tries to make ends meet as best she can, but her top priority remains supporting her nine-year-old daughter Julia, a talented pianist. A new relationship with Josef, an Austrian from Vienna, brings her hope and strength for the future. Unexpectedly, however, she receives a call from Andrej, her former partner from her youth and Júlia’s father, who has just been released from prison. He is in Slovakia and tells her that he is seriously ill. This news shocks Perla. Finally, she decides to take a risky step—with false documents, she returns to Czechoslovakia to finally come to terms with her past. However, this decision threatens her newly built existence, her newly acquired freedom, and her daughter’s safety.
