The Passengers of the Night

Mikhaël Hers

French drama The Passengers of the Night premiered in the main competition at this year’s Berlinale. Writer and director Mikhaël Hers built the film mainly on the acting mastery of Charlotte Gainsbourg and a subtle family story. We are transported to Paris in the 1980s to follow the life vicissitudes of a woman who, after years of separation from her husband, has to find work. However, she eventually finds much more in the radio show where she gets a job. By chance, she meets a girl, Talulah, who changes more than just her life. The name Talulah is of Native American origin and figuratively means jumping water, or jumping into water that stirs up any calm surface.
