Two Prosecutors

Sergei Loznitsa

The year is 1937. When a letter from one of the political prisoners manages to get past the strict rules and ends up on the desk of young prosecutor Kornev, it sets off a series of revelations about corruption and violence within the NKVD (People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs). However, his desire for justice draws him into a deadly struggle with the regime, which mercilessly devours its own people in the Stalinist era. The NKVD was responsible for Soviet political oppression during Stalinism, especially for Stalin’s repressions. It administered the gulag system of forced labor, deported entire nations and peasants labeled as kulaks to uninhabited parts of the country. Sergei Loznitsa offers another chilling look into the past, one that is uncomfortably relevant today.
