The Slovak Oscar nomination will be announced at the 20th edition of Cinematik. Piešt’any will turn into a big city of cinema

9. September 2025

The Cinematik International Film Festival enters its 20th anniversary year. For two decades it has been bringing the best of domestic and international cinema to Piešt’any. Since its inception in 2006, it has screened more than 2000 films and has become one of the most important film events in Slovakia.
The opening ceremony will take place on 10 September and will include the Slovak premiere of Tereza Nvotová’s film Father, which will be accompanied by a large delegation of filmmakers. The anticipated drama will be screened in the largest cinema hall in Slovakia at the House of Arts.
Right at the beginning, the festival will also bring a novelty: the Cinematik Talent Award will be presented for the first time. The first winners of the Cinematematik Award will be actor Milan Ondrík and actress Dominika Morávková, both prominent personalities of the young generation of Slovak cinema.

The opening of the festival will also have an international overlap. It is on the Cinematik stage that the name of the Slovak title will be announced, which will become the official nominee for the Oscar® in the Best International Feature Film category.
“The twentieth edition is a milestone for us. We want not only to take stock, but also to bring new impulses. That is why the Cinematik Talent Award was created to highlight the exceptional personalities of our film scene,” says Vladimír Štric, the festival’s artistic director.
The Cinematik Festival will offer almost a hundred films, discussions, concerts, accompanying and industry events over six days from 10 to 15 September. Piešt’any will once again become the Slovak capital of film for a week. “We have prepared one of the best programmes in the history of the festival. Film lovers are in for a literal cinematic paradise,” adds Peter Konečný, a member of the programme team.
