Peter Kerekes’ documentary comedy WISHING ON A STAR will have its Slovak premiere at Cinematik

26. July 2024

A simple yet effective method to change your destiny. Travel on your birthday. According to surveys, only 7% of the world’s population admits to believing in astrology. In doing so, each of us has been caught studying our own horoscope at least once. When asked why we do it, we say that it’s fun, that we’re curious, that we do it out of boredom or to distract ourselves at work. We all agree that reading about our own future is comforting. If it brings good news. Luciana de Leoni d’Asparedo is an expert in active astrology. According to her, you can change your destiny if on your birthday you travel to a place where there is an ideal constellation of stars. Luciana lives in a crumbling mansion in Aiello del Friuli, near the Venetian lagoon, with her daughter, husband and mother-in-law.

Director and producer Peter Kerekes and his crew were visiting her for seven years. Wishing on a Star follows Luciana and the stories of her five clients as they search for a new life, fated love, passion, fulfillment of their desires, and answers to questions no one has given them yet. Giovanni (52), twins Adriana and Giuliana (48), Alessandra (79), Valentina (33) and Barbara (55) come to see Luciana, and after a careful conversation, they receive the exact coordinates of where to spend their birthday. From Alaska, to Taiwan, Cres Island in Croatia, Lebanon and Brazil. The film will have its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, Orizzonti competition section.
