Cinematik is going to screen festival hits in a new section entitled Paths of Glory

The Cinematik International Film Festival is going to present for the first time this year the new section Paths of Glory. It will introduce ten award-winning festival films whose paths of glory have already begun and will continue during Cinematik.

The exceptional selection of titles in the Paths of Glory section emphasizes the content, as well as the level of professional workmanship. It opens with the film Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) by French filmmaker Céline Sciamma, who won the Best Screenplay and the Queer Palm Award at the Cannes Film Festival. This historical drama will take us to the second half of the 18th century, to a picturesque Breton Island, where the main character of Marianne is sent to paint a wedding portrait of the soon to be bride Héloise. She is however not rushing into the agreed marriage and shows constantly increasing interest in Marianne

The winner of this years Golden Palm in Cannes, the South Korean black comedy Parasite (2019), also cannot be missing in Cinematik’s programme. In his newest movie director Bong Joon-ho is focusing on the tragicomic effort of a poor family to parasitize on the shiny life of a successful businessman. Having humor, tension and a deeper social dimension, it is a thrillingly entertaining movie with the potential to reach wider audiences.

This year’s Cannes Best Director Award went to Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenn, the masters of film realism, for the movie drama Young Ahmed (2019). It tells the story of a teenage Muslim who finds himself at the crossroads of worldly pleasures and religious ideals. The film is a study of a young soul on the brink of an act of extremism which is easy to condemn and almost impossible to understand.

Other films in this section also started their journey to fame in Cannes. Romanian director Corneliu Porumboiu brought the crime comedy The Wistlers (2019), which takes the viewer to a mountainous Canary Island.
The main character is a corrupt Romanian cop trying to free a mafia salesman from prison. However, if he wants to complete his mission, he must first learn the dialect silbo gomero, which is full of characteristic hissing and whistling sounds.

The Icelandic drama A White, White Day (2019) by director Hlynur Palmason is about a man of law who, after his wife’s death, embarks on a search for her secrets.

And the true Sicilian gangster movie The Traitor (2019) by Marco Bellocchio, revives the true story of Tommas Buscett, the first member of the Cosa Nostra, who broke the sacred Omertà and sent hundreds of his criminal comrades to prison.

Aren’t you recoiled by more naturalistic film experiences? In that case, do not miss the Fatih Akin thriller drama The Golden Glove (2019), which premiered at the main competition at the Berlinale. It is a brutal portrait of a perverted offender who omits his anger and frustration on the simple-minded guests of his favorite pub. The drama filled with metaphorical and literal abominations is among other things revealing the dark side of the so-called German Economic Miracle in the 1950s.

The psycho-triler The Lodge (2019) by Austrian director duo Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz introduces Cinematik’s audience to a remote mountain chalet, where a young woman begins to catch up with her past as a member of a suicide sect. Richard Armitage, Alicia Silverstone and Riley Kenough starred in the film, which premiered at the Sundance Independent Film Festival.

Christina Hendricks, Sienna Miller and Aaron Paul portray the main characters in Jake Scott’s drama American Woman (2019). It is the story of a woman raising her grandson after her daughter disappeared without a trace. The film premiered at IFF Toronto.
