African Mirror

Mischa Hedinger

For decades, Swiss filmmaker and traveller René Gardi popularized an image of Africa as a pre-modern place filled with beautiful “savages”. Of course, it is idealized, colonial and racist image. African Mirror, composed only of archival footage, deconstructs Gardi’s work whose ambivalent pictures mirror our European self-conception in myriad ways. The film reveals image production as a form of colonialism and shows how we have refused to truly look into this mirror to this very day.
