Emília Vášaryová. We know her face from newspaper covers, magazines and movie posters, and yet we know so little about her. For more than sixty years, she has co-created the shape of modern Czech-Slovak theatre, film and television, but few of her collaborators know the sources of her creative efforts. The film Emília will take viewers through the twists and turns of time, allowing them to understand the context of the actress’s life and artistic endeavours. Through the testimonies of friends, colleagues, collaborators, film and theatre critics, the authors compose before us a colourful mosaic of opinions, which gradually builds up a picture of an extraordinary personality. The documentary includes valuable archival footage capturing historical turning points, recalling star moments of Slovak theatre and cinema, as well as intimate moments from the actress’s life. Emília Vášaryová let the filmmakers into her private life, revealed her way of thinking about acting, and shared memories of close people, colleagues and friends. Thanks to her openness, the documentary becomes a report on the efforts of a whole generation of Slovak artists who shaped our consciousness at the turn of the millennium.
