13th International film festival Cinematik Piešťany has screened almost one hundred short and feature films in fourteen sections. The audience’s response was extraordinary. Among of the regular parts of the festival are two competitive sections – Meeting Point Europe under the auspices of FIPRESCI and Cinematik.doc.

The festival’s major prize for the best European feature film, Meeting Point Europe, goes to a strong, controversial, and partly autobiographical Cold War (Zimna wojna). The Polish film directed by Pawel Pawlikowski is a passionate love story between Zula and Wiktor, who are fatefully mismatched. During the turbulent historical events, they are fighting their own cold war. They cannot be together, neither separated. Set against the background of the Cold War in the 1950s in Warszaw (Poland), Berlin, and Paris, accompanied by jazz and folk, Zula and Wiktor are playing their own beautiful yet bitter ballad. The Cold War movie won also the Audience award.

The jury of the Slovak documentary award Cinematik.doc have chosen an extraordinary Slovak film Crazy Against Nation, capturing the topic of civic activism and mainly life and opinions of an artist Peter Kalmus. The activist, performer and artist Peter Kalmus intervenes. He breaks sickles, he attacks communist heads with red colour, fascits by mud, public space is his battleground. The author of the movie is director and screenwriter Adam Hanuljak. The jury’s statement: “A portrait capturing a man, artist and activist in open situations, who fights against the society and himself. The life as a happening.”

The Mayor’s Price (Price of the Mayor of the Piešťany city) goes to a new Slovak documentary The Last Self-portrait directed by Marek Kuboš. Kuboš is attempting to answer the question why he haven’t created a movie in the last fourteen years. Statement for the award: “The director’s particular journey to places of his former movies. Life as an intimate road-movie.”

Recently ended 13th issue of the IFF Cinematik has brought the best of the European and World cinematography and had a strong audience response. The opening ceremony has attracted over 700 viewers and the number of accredited visitors is among the highest in Slovakia.
