Cult & Beyond: Cars

27. July 2014

“The chase is the purest form of cinema, something that can’t be done in any other medium, not in literature nor on a stage nor on a painter’s canvas. A chase must appear spontaneous and out of control, but it must be meticulously choreographed, if only for safety considerations,” wrote William Friedkin, the director of The French Connection, in his memoirs The Friedkin Connection. His undisputed masterpiece The French Connection has gone down in cinema history for its legendary car chase through busy daylight streets of New York. I must admit he could not be more accurate. Roaring engines, screeching tyres and smell of gasoline immediately pump adrenaline through our veins. The thrill of car chase could only be fully experienced (safely) nowhere but on cinema screen. Sit down, fasten your seatbelts, put the pedal to the metal and enjoy the ride through sun-drenched city streets, dusty outback highways, country back roads, post-nuclear dirt roads or racing circuits…
